Ghosts and the Reconstruction of Realities: on Phantom Islands

On Phantom Islands (2018)

By AliSina Azari · Eestar (ایستار) · 2018 · translated from the Persian

Rouzbeh Rashidi’s latest experimental feature — Rashidi being the Iranian filmmaker resident in Ireland — is in fact a challenge to every line ever drawn between illusion and reality: it is the search for clarity for figures hidden among images saturated in blue; or it is the story of the wandering of a man and a woman who have entrusted the mission of discovering themselves and the world around them to the purgatory of their own dreams: Phantom Islands (2018). Bewilderment is therefore the first rule of knowledge in this territory; a choice that leads us, in step with the man and the woman, towards rebuilding and rediscovering the island(s) — that is, the unknown surroundings. Rashidi’s camera, along this path, slowly draws the map of this nowhere: it turns constantly in every corner of the island(s), plays with time, and each time deforms the images in some way: it settles colours inside indistinct frames; and through its choice of lenses and effects draws them towards one another, and in these interstices insists, at every moment, on the expression of a face, on formed figures, or on a point within the image, with the intention of colouring reality and moving ever further from the mere documentation of events: a kind of struggle between revealing the impression of moments and the plain representation of reality. With such choices Rashidi’s camera attempts to catch its viewer somewhere — for instance — between the clarity and the invisibility of the Polaroid photographs of its ghosts; to set feeling and emotion trembling; to bind every rupture into the form of the relation between bodies, figures suspended in space, and to generate a delirium of situations: pushing back the postcard form of places, and grasping at storytelling in its most abstract form.

In this way the ghosts take possession of every frame of the film: in the form of a man and a woman — an Adam and Eve fallen into an archipelago of wandering; in the spatial dimensions given over to the coming and going of tourists; and in those frames-within-frames — the presence of the photograph set against cinema — which make of Rouzbeh Rashidi and his crew behind the camera new citizens for this world of ghosts; a world that recounts the discovery of dry land and the manner of its suspension among the waters. And in accepting this invitation we seem to find the possibility of penetrating the purgatory of gazes and gestures; a possibility revealed in different forms at different moments: in the expressive form of the constant torment and ardour of Daniel Fawcett and Clara Pais, the film’s performers; in their occasional staring at a point outside the frame; in the restless figures of bodies; in the tensions running between limbs; and in the cinematographer’s intelligent choice of colours, especially in the work with blue, which is like the folding-together of the island(s) by sky and sea.

On another side, Phantom Islands is the narrative of yielded bodies and their relation to sounds that give them a different definition at every moment: the murmur of people and its trace in the solitude of the island’s margins; the arrangement of musics that turn the presence of bodies wandering beneath giant aquariums into an experience of horror cinema; and the winding of bodies about one another, the form of their reclining in a corner of the shore, which in the separate plectra of musical instruments takes aim at two different but concordant modes of creation: a visual translation for the making of impossibilities; as though the sound(s) add to the image(s) something the frames are trying to hide; that is, the more various the sounds and the more complex the form of the bodies, the more new ways become possible for discovering the feeling that has remained hidden behind the frames. From this perspective, for Rouzbeh Rashidi experimental cinema is at the same time a vehicle for summoning the history of cinema between the images: the marital crisis and the collapse of every familiar rule of melodrama in Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession (1981); sitting on the shoulders of the great Jean Epstein, and that surge of feeling(s) and his unmediated experiences in confronting reality (to both of whom this film of Rouzbeh Rashidi is dedicated!); and the nearness and distance of bodies and their relation to the rhythm of images — both in the mise-en-scène and in the system by which frames are placed side by side — which recalls the history of experimental cinema and, for instance, Werner Nekes’s brilliant experiment T-WO-MEN (1972).

And near the end of the film there is a moment that shows well Rashidi’s experimentalism in tracing the manner of the embrace between documentary and storytelling: the woman stares into the camera. She reconstructs fear in the fever of musical poundings. Drawing back a little, and with a smile, she calls the uncanny in from outside the frame. The form of the body gradually takes shape and materialises upon a boulder: the woman raises the song of the wolf. Rashidi wishes to seize the fugitive landscape in the form of bodies; as if the last road to knowledge might be the digestion of landscape within faces: the superimposition of the faces of the woman and the man with those staring, anxious looks into Rashidi’s camera, and at the same time their slow wandering in the sunset of the island(s)’ shore; this is the film’s closing frame, in the company of the illusions, the reveries and the wanderings of a man and a woman who have deposited their spirit and their feeling along the film’s unforeseeable path. With Phantom Islands, Rouzbeh Rashidi is one of the young and indeed resonant voices of experimental cinema in these years.
