Synopsis
Solitaire is an unsettling experimental ghost story that delves into themes of family, home, identity, and gender—portrayed as shifting, parasitic forces that inhabit bodies and spaces. Through a wordless and visually poetic narrative, the film balances deep mystery with emotional resonance, offering a unique exploration of universal human experiences. The story follows a brother who returns to his family home after a long absence, only to discover his sister has died. As their identities begin to merge, they are unable to re-enter the house, which appears possessed by an entity that is both maternal and childlike. Meanwhile, darker, ominous forces loom in the background… This bold feature from Maximilian Le Cain, one of Ireland’s most celebrated experimental filmmakers, stars Natasha Bourke and Aisling O’Connell, both multidisciplinary artists acclaimed for their work in film and performance art. The evocative soundscape is created by Karen Power, a Cork-based composer and frequent collaborator of Le Cain.
