Michael Higgins

Michael Higgins — Experimental Film Society

Biography

Michael Higgins is an Irish underground filmmaker, photographer and installation artist, best known for his analogue film work and a long association with Experimental Film Society. He grew up in Ireland and studied at Dublin City University and the National College of Art and Design.

His films blur the line between documentary and fiction, disrupting everyday perception to offer other ways of seeing; they emerge from the interplay of sound, image and atmosphere rather than conventional storytelling. His methods are as physical as they are poetic: At One Fell Swoop (2015), a stone carver’s introspective odyssey in rural Ireland, was shot on a fifty-year-old wind-up camera using expired 16mm black-and-white stock that he hand-processed himself, while SMOLT (2013) immerses the viewer in inner-city Dublin through the eyes of two twelve-year-old boys, conceived in the style of a bootleg VHS.
